Keep Watch, Be Ready

Many Christians would agree that the manifestation of the signs of the end of the age and of the coming of Christ are unfolding more and more, year by year, month by month...day by day.  In the books of Matthew (Ch 24), Mark (Ch 13), and Luke (Ch 21), Jesus was very clear about the signs leading to the end of time as we know it.  These signs include progressive increases in the frequency and intensity (like birth pains) of:

  • Deceit
  • Wars and Rumors of War
  • National and Kingdom Divisions
  • Natural Disasters such as Earthquakes and Hurricanes
  • Famine
  • Plagues/Diseases
  • Wickedness
  • Hatred
  • Familial Betrayal, Rebellion and Murder
  • Persecution, Imprisonment and Murder of Christians
  • False Prophets and Messiahs
  • Fearful Events and Great Signs from Heaven
  • Spiritual Complacency
  • Terrors, Sorrows, Tribulations, and Great Tribulations

Many believe that at some point in time after the rapture (the catching up in the air of saints of God), the Antichrist, a charismatic, worldwide leader, master of intrigue, and representative of satan, will come to power.  He will sign a peace treaty with Israel, which will mark the beginning of the tribulation period, a seven (7) year period of great distress for all of mankind.

In the midst of these seven years (after three and a half years of tribulation), the Antichrist will cancel his peace treaty with Israel, and will set himself up in the temple and proclaim to be the Messiah.  The three and a half years following this cancellation of the treaty will be known as the Great Tribulation period- a time of great distress unequaled from the beginning of the world and never to be equaled again.  In fact, these days will be so distressful that if they would not be cut short, no one would be able to survive them- Matthew 24:14-30.

During this last three and a half years prior to Jesus' second coming, the Antichrist's aim will be to gain power over the entire world.  It will be extremely difficult for anyone to stand firm in his Christian faith because no one will be able to buy or sell anything (food, water, clothing, insurance, etc.) unless s/he takes the mark of the beast (666), and if people refuse to take the mark, they will risk losing their lives.

When the Antichrist steps in claiming to be the Messiah, those in Judea, which many believe represents "the household of faith all over the world", have been warned to flee to the mountains for safety.  Daniel 11:41 states, "He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon."  Many have identified the rose red city of Petra, located at the entrance to the ancient land of Edom, just 16 miles northwest of Ma'an in the southern part of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, as this location where the Eternal will protect and provide food and water for His chosen people- the Jews- during the Great Tribulation.

It is believed that saints of God in other places throughout the world, must either fend for themselves or risk being amongst the fifty percent of the population that will die at the hands of the Antichrist or from war, famine, disease, and natural disasters.  The aim of End Time Solutions is not to try to stop the inevitable end time events from occurring, but to prepare saints of God to keep watch and be ready for them.

In order for us to prepare for the things to come, there must be a paradigm shift in our attitudes from division and complacency to unity and concern.  (Prayerfully it will not take a major catastrophe in order for this to happen).

Jesus told us to keep watch and be ready for the perilous times ahead and for His second coming (Mt. 24: 42-44).  In order for us to be ready, however, we must first become concerned and united enough to get ready. Because no one knows the day or hour when these things will come, the time for us to keep watch and make preparations so we can be ready, for that great day, and the days leading up to that great day, when saints of God will meet together in the air to be with Jesus for our great family reunion in the sky, is NOW!

During family reunions, it is common for us to open our homes to out of town family members. We oftentimes go through great lengths to impress our guests as we remain watchful of, and ready for their arrival.  We make sure our homes are spotless, linen fresh, refrigerators and essentials well stocked,  meals prepared,  and our children  are typically well-informed of our behavioral expectations of them during our guest's visitations.

In the best of situations, our guests will give us, at a minimum, an estimated time of their arrival to our homes so that we can adequately prepare for their arrival.  Sometimes, however, our family reunion guests may give us very little, if any, prior notice of their arrival, but unexpectedly show up on our doorsteps, leaving us no time to make preparations for them.  Even when we have been given ample notification of our guest's estimated time of arrival, sometimes, out of our own complacency or unwillingness to unite with members of our household to prepare for their arrival, we fail to make suitable provision for them.

Although Jesus, Himself, is unaware of the day and hour of His appearing (Mark 13:32), and even though He was not required to give us one clue about the time He would be coming for His family reunion with us, He graciously gave us a clear estimated time of arrival by not only sharing ample signs of the perilous end times that would precede His coming, but also, solutions for us to prepare for and endure them.

Because we do not know the day or hour when we will be effected by these end time events, we must all begin to make preparations for them now.  Unfortunately, many Christians are complacently looking forward with great anticipation to being caught up in the rapture in hopes of avoiding the perilous times ahead. Very few are making preparations for the impending sorrows, terror, tribulation and Great Tribulation for themselves, let alone, for members of their families, churches, ministries, and Christian organizations.
As in the days of Noah, when people were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage up until the day the flood came like a thief, many are kicking back waiting in complacency and security of their own salvation for Jesus to rapture them up in the sky to be with Him, as opposed to uniting and loving those who will be left behind to endure the turmoil and disasters ahead, enough to make preparations for them.

Why keep watch and be ready
When we make preparations for our house guests- whether they spend several days or just come over to share a meal with us, we typically want to impress them with our welcoming hospitality, decency, orderliness, good food, well-behaved children, and prosperity.  Just as we place priority on preparing our homes for our guests, all servants of God need to selflessly prepare the household of faith for Jesus' return with wisdom and faithfulness, as  He wants to be impressed with the preparations we make for Him when He returns, as well.  We should want to impress Him- if not simply because we love Him and want to please Him, then at the very least, because He told us it will be good for us so we can be put in charge of all His possessions.

When to keep watch and be ready
"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door- Mark 13:28-29.
When we are expecting guests to come to our home, we do not begin making preparations for their arrival when we see them standing, or hear them knocking at the door, but we expect to have everything well prepared for them at some point in time prior to their arrival. Because no man knows the day or hour of the coming of the Son of God, we need to make preparations for His coming NOW!  Jesus warned us to BE READY because He will come when we do not expect Him.  He did not say, "GET READY", but "BE READY".  Therefore, even though He gave us signs of His coming, because we know not the day or hour when  we must BE READY, if we are not already ready, we must make preparations and get ready for all the physical and spiritual sorrows that are unfolding before our very eyes, NOW, and with urgency.

How to keep watch and be ready
There are some things over which we have control, and some things over which, we do not (wars, famine, diseases, natural disasters, false prophets, wickedness, the Antichrist, Great Tribulation, and the like).  For the things over which we have control, Jesus gave us both spiritual and physical End Time Solutions:
Spiritual Solutions
  • Stand firm in our faith so we will not be deceived, but so we will be saved- Matthew 24:4, 13
  • Be not frightened or alarmed when we hear of wars and rumors of wars-Mark 13:7, Luke 21: 9
  • Be alert and on our guard so we are not found sleeping when He comes-Mark 13:13, 36)
  • Be careful so our hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life-Luke 21:34
  • Worry not beforehand about what to say whenever we are arrested and brought to trial, but say whatever is given us at the time by the Holy Spirit- Mark 13:11
  • Pray that our flight will not take place in the winter or on the Sabbath, that we may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that we may be able to stand before the Son of Man- Matthew 24: 20, Luke 21:36
  • Do not believe or follow false Christs who tells us "Here is the Christ", "There He is", "He's out in the desert", "He's in the inner room", or, "I am He" and "The time is near"- Matthew 24: 23-27, Luke 21: 8
Physical Solutions
  • Learn when the time of the end is near from the fig tree and all other trees- Mathew 24: 32-33, Luke 21: 29
  • Keep watch- and tell everyone to "Watch"- because we do not know on what day our Lord will come- Matthew 24: 42, Mark 13:37
  • Be ready because the Son of Man will come at an hour when we do not expect Him- Matthew 24: 44
  • Be wise and faithful to give them their food at the proper time- Matthew 24: 45-47
  • Flee to the mountains without returning to our homes or inside the city to get anything when we see standing in the holy place the abomination that causes desolation-Matthew 24: 15-18, Luke 21: 21
  • Stand up and lift up our heads when we see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory because our redemption is drawing near- Luke 21: 27-28

When we are expecting guests to visit our home, our primary concerns are typically to make sure of the following:

  • The meal is ready before they arrive
  • The house is thoroughly clean, yard intact, and everyone is  bathed and well dressed.  (Even though we may be expecting our guests to arrive at our door, we must still guard it, and prior to opening it, make sure that we are opening it to our guests, and not a thief or intruder).
  • We are keeping track of time so that we can remain on schedule in completing our tasks, and have everything ready when our company arrives so that when they do arrive, we can widely open our door for them because our house is in order, with pride, and not shame.
In the same manner that each member of our households comes together to get our homes and ourselves in order for our guests, we, as end time Christians must unite to prepare the household of faith for the coming of Christ, each with his own assignment.  In each of the books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, when  Jesus was telling His disciples about the signs of the end of the age and of His coming, He included a different parable that highlights our four primary responsibilities for making certain that His servants are well-prepared for the coming distress, and for His coming.  These four end time responsibilities/work assignments are as follows:

Food Service

"Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the Master has put in charge of the servants in His household to give them their food at the proper time?  It will be good for that servant whose Master finds him doing so when He returns.  I tell you the truth, He will put him in charge of all His possessions.  But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, 'My Master is staying away a long time,' and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.  The Master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect Him and at an hour he is not aware of.  He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth- Matthew 24:45-51.

Preparing to meet the physical needs of the household of faith in relation to natural disasters, famine, wars, diseases, flight routes to, and shelters in, the mountains, and food at the proper time- which is before they arrive- so they will be able to stand and lift up their heads when they see Jesus coming.

It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch- Mark 13:34.

Performing housekeeping tasks to strengthen the household of faith so that Christians are standing firm, on guard, careful, praying, and not frightened,   worried, anxious,  or following false Christs.  Also, keep ing watch at the door to ascertain that the house, and everyone inside, is safe from intruders.

Time Keepers

He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.  Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near- Luke 21:29-31.

Keeping watch of the exponentially increasing signs of deceit, wars and rumors of war, national and kingdom divisions, natural disasters, famine, diseases, wickedness, hatred, persecutions of saints, false prophets, fearful events, spiritual complacency, the spread of the gospel throughout the world, and the introduction of the Antichrist,  his mark, and  his one world government.
